More interested in psychological frights than graphic on-screen violence, "Crazy Eights" gets by with a few jolting scene-cappers but not enough exploration into the minds of its characters. When a childhood friend passes away, six thirty-somethings travel to her old home and stumble upon a rusty, deserted mental institution. As dark secrets from their own past are uncovered and literal skeletons revealed, they one by one meet a grisly fate. Director James Koya Jones, seemingly adamant that he is making a more highfalutin thriller than an average slasher film, shies away from the expected carnage and focuses on how the people at hand react in their possibly supernatural situation. The problem is that, with few likable characters, not enough development into their key relationship as children, and an anticlimactic ending, "Crazy Eights" doesn't quite have what it takes to be low-key and reserved and still hold more than cursory interest.
